Is Turkish Coffee Good for You? What the Science Says

Turkish coffee is rich in antioxidants and linked to lower risk of type 2 diabetes, liver disease and heart-related death. It also carries one honest caveat: because it is unfiltered, it can modestly raise LDL cholesterol. Here is what the research actually says.

Coffee has a health halo
Almost every week a headline claims coffee cures or causes something. Turkish coffee gets the same treatment, often with claims that run far ahead of the evidence. It is worth separating what is measured from what is marketed.
The brewing method changes the answer
Most coffee research studies filtered drip coffee. Turkish coffee is unfiltered, so some findings apply differently to it, in both directions. That single fact explains most of the confusion around whether it is good or bad for you.
The honest version is still a good story
When you stay with well-designed studies, Turkish coffee holds up well. It carries real antioxidants and is linked to lower risk of several conditions. It also has one genuine drawback that responsible sources do not hide.

What antioxidants does Turkish coffee contain?

Coffee is one of the richest dietary sources of chlorogenic acids, a family of plant antioxidants. A 200 mL cup has been reported to contain 70 to 350 mg of these compounds.[1]
Chlorogenic acids help neutralize free radicals, the reactive molecules linked to cell damage over time.
Turkish coffee is served in a much smaller cup than that 200 mL measure, but it is brewed at a far higher coffee-to-water ratio and served unfiltered, so nothing is held back by a paper filter.
Can Turkish coffee lower the risk of type 2 diabetes?
Regular coffee drinking is consistently linked to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. A meta-analysis of 30 prospective studies covering more than 1.1 million people found the risk decreased by about 6 percent for each additional cup per day.[2]
The effect held for both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, which tells researchers that caffeine is not the whole story. Chlorogenic acids appear to help the body regulate blood sugar and insulin.
This is an association from observational studies, not proof that coffee prevents diabetes, but it is one of the most reproducible findings in the field.
Is Turkish coffee good for your liver?
Coffee is one of the few foods repeatedly tied to better liver outcomes. A systematic review of nine studies found that raising intake by two cups a day was associated with a 44 percent lower risk of cirrhosis.[3]
The protective link showed up across different causes of liver disease, including alcohol-related and hepatitis-related damage. Researchers credit a mix of coffee compounds rather than caffeine alone.
If you drink Turkish coffee, this benefit travels with the cup regardless of how it is brewed.
Is Turkish coffee good or bad for your heart?

Both, depending on how much you drink. Moderate coffee intake is tied to lower cardiovascular mortality, with the largest reduction, around 21 percent, seen near three cups a day.[4] But there is a real caveat specific to Turkish coffee.
Because it is unfiltered, Turkish coffee carries two natural oils, cafestol and kahweol, that a paper filter would remove. Turkish coffee contains 6 to 12 mg of these diterpenes per cup, against 0.2 to 0.6 mg in paper-filtered coffee — a difference of more than twentyfold.[1] Espresso sits in between, filtered under pressure through a portafilter, one of several differences covered in our Turkish coffee vs espresso comparison.
In a meta-analysis of 12 randomized controlled trials, unfiltered coffee raised LDL cholesterol by about 11.9 mg/dL, while filtered coffee produced little change.[6]
Does Turkish coffee protect the brain?
Long-term coffee drinking is linked to a lower risk of Parkinson's disease. A meta-analysis of nine prospective cohort studies tied higher caffeine intake to roughly 39 percent lower risk in men and 29 percent lower in women.[5]
Caffeine is thought to protect the dopamine-producing neurons that Parkinson's destroys. The finding is more consistent in men than in women, where hormone use appears to change the picture, and the evidence for other brain conditions is less settled.
This is best read as a promising signal rather than a guarantee.
Can drinking coffee help you live longer?
On average, coffee drinkers live modestly longer than non-drinkers. A dose-response meta-analysis of 21 prospective studies found the lowest all-cause mortality at about four cups a day, roughly 16 percent lower than non-drinkers.[4]
This is an association, and coffee drinkers may differ in other ways, but the pattern is remarkably consistent across large studies. Notably, the same research found no link between coffee and higher cancer mortality.

How much Turkish coffee is safe to drink?
For most healthy adults, three to four small cups a day. The FDA considers up to 400 mg of caffeine a day safe for healthy adults,[9] and a traditional Turkish cup holds roughly 50 to 65 mg, so caffeine is rarely the limiting factor.
The benefit curve peaks lower than the caffeine ceiling. An umbrella review covering 201 meta-analyses found the largest reductions in all-cause and cardiovascular mortality at three to four cups a day, not at higher intakes.[7] A 2024 umbrella review across nearly 12 million people reached a similar conclusion for stroke risk.[8]
Because Turkish coffee is unfiltered, the cholesterol effect is the practical reason to stay inside that range rather than push higher. Pregnant people are generally advised to stay under 200 mg of caffeine a day, and anyone with a heart condition, high LDL, or caffeine sensitivity should set their own limit with a doctor.
