Have you noticed small white spots on the bottom of your Luna Kettle? Or perhaps your morning tea has started tasting a little "off"? Don't worry—your kettle isn't broken or dirty. It just needs a little spa day.

These white spots are limescale (calcium and magnesium deposits from your water), and they are perfectly normal. Here is how to dissolve them safely and restore your kettle to its original shine.

Why You Need to Descale

  1. Taste: Scale can flake off into your drink and give your water a chalky, mineral taste.
  2. Speed: A layer of scale acts as insulation, forcing the heating element to work harder and slower to boil water.
  3. Silence: Heavy scale buildup can cause the kettle to become noisier as water bubbles get trapped under the mineral layer.

Method 1: The White Vinegar Solution (Most Common)

This is the easiest method using items you likely already have in your pantry.

1. Mix your solution.

Fill the Luna kettle with a mixture of 1 cup of white vinegar and 3 cups of water (a 1:3 ratio). You want enough to cover the bottom heating plate and any scale marks on the walls.

2. Boil and Soak.

  • Turn the kettle on and bring the mixture to a Boil (212°F).
  • Once it boils, turn it off and let the hot mixture sit inside the kettle for 20 to 30 minutes. The acidity will break down the minerals.

3. Scrub (Optional).

If the buildup is thick, use a soft sponge or cloth to gently wipe the inside. Never use steel wool or abrasive scourers, as these will scratch the stainless steel.

4. Rinse and Refresh.

  • Pour out the vinegar solution.
  • Fill the kettle with fresh water to the MAX line.
  • Boil it one last time and discard that water. This flushes out any lingering vinegar smell.

Method 2: The Lemon or Citric Acid Method (Odor-Free)

If you hate the smell of vinegar, this method smells much fresher!

1. Add the acid.

  • Fresh Lemon: Squeeze the juice of two lemons into the kettle and drop the peels in too.
  • Citric Acid: Use the descaling packet included in your SAKI box (or buy citric acid powder online). Add 2 tablespoons.

2. Boil and Wait.

  • Fill the kettle halfway with water.
  • Boil the mixture.
  • Let it cool completely (about 1 hour). The citric acid needs time to dissolve the calcium.

3. Rinse.

Discard the mixture, give it a quick rinse with cool water, and you are done!


How Often Should I Descale?

This depends entirely on your water hardness:

  • Soft Water Areas: Every 3–4 months.
  • Hard Water Areas: Once a month.
  • The "Eye Test": If you look inside and see white spots or a rainbow-colored film on the bottom, it’s time to descale.

Pro Tip: Use Filtered Water. The best way to prevent scale is to stop it before it starts. Using filtered water (from a Brita pitcher or fridge filter) will drastically reduce mineral buildup and make your tea taste cleaner.
