Sand coffee refers to a traditional method of brewing coffee, commonly used for preparing Turkish coffee or similar styles. In this method, a small pot (typically a cezve) is placed in hot sand, allowing the coffee to heat slowly and evenly. This unique technique creates a rich, flavorful brew with a thick, velvety foam (köpük).

How to Make Sand Coffee:

  1. Ingredients:
    • 1 cup cold water
    • 1 heaping teaspoon finely ground Turkish coffee
    • Sugar (optional, according to taste)
  2. Equipment:
    • A cezve
    • A sand coffee setup (pan with fine sand, heated over a burner or electric sand coffee machine)
  3. Steps:
    • Prepare the Coffee: Add water, coffee grounds, and sugar (if desired) to the cezve. Stir to combine.
    • Heat the Sand: Ensure the sand is evenly heated to a medium-high temperature. Sand heaters maintain consistent heat, while traditional setups may require adjusting the burner heat.
    • Brew in the Sand: Place the cezve into the hot sand, ensuring the base is in full contact with the sand for even heat distribution. Watch closely as the coffee heats. Foam will begin to rise to the surface without boiling.
    • Control the Heat: Remove the cezve briefly from the sand when the foam reaches the top to prevent overflowing. Repeat this process 1-2 times for a richer foam.
    • Serve: Pour the coffee slowly into small cups (fincans), ensuring each cup gets a portion of the foam.
